VAT is the sales tax of the European Economic Community, also called TVA, IVA, MwSt or USt. If you live outside Europe or outside the EEC you don't need to pay it. Norway, Switzerland, the Channel Island and the Canary Islands for example are exempt from VAT.

VAT is the sales tax of the European Economic Community (EEC). If your purchases are being shipped or picked up with in the EEC you need to pay VAT. If you have a non-German VAT number yourself and the shipping address is outside of Germany then we won't charge you VAT.
