Millefiori or Mosaic beads are made from colorful glass canes, which are pre- made from a variety of vibrant colors. The Millefiori beads are created by pulling molten glass initially laid out in a mosaic pattern into long thin glass rods, called Millefiori canes. Millefiori means "thousand flowers" in Italian. When cut the glass reveals the beautiful Mosaic designs within. These Mosaic slices are then placed onto a bead or other Murano art glass, which is why in Italy Millefiori beads are called Mosaic beads. Please also view Marcia Jo Mycko's essay about the Magical Millefiori Bead.
Sommerso beads are named after the technique, which submerges different colors beneath clear glass. The use of goldstone (Aventurine) gives them the sparkle for which they are known. Sommerso beads are also called Aventurina beads or Aventurine beads. Our Sommerso beads are the perfect complement to any design you may have in mind, and very cost-effective.
Fiorato beads are named for the elegant, delicate flower designs on the beads. They are extremely popular with country and many ethnical clothing styles and in Asia. Fiorato is THE original Venetian bead style, very Rococo´ish, and reminiscent of the delicate floral patterns in elegant Venice sitting rooms. Fiorato beads get their elegant floral patterns by the beadmaker hand painting with small canes of colored and transparent molten Murano glass (similar to tole painting) on the surface of the bead. This takes an experienced, talented glass bead maker. Many times Aventurina, or Aventurine (goldstone) is used for accent designs.
Hand blown beads are completely hollow inside and therefore very light, however not as fragile as they seem. We bounce them many times on our tile floors and they will not break!. You can string them with ribbon or wire wrap them in a cage. Also our silver wrap beads are very popular in between these beads. Our hand blown beads are made from Murano glass and then furnace hardened.
Ca d'Oro and Rezzonico beads are named after two very famous palazzos in Venice, the Ca d'Oro and the Ca d'Rezzonico respectively. The Ca'd Oro's facade (house of gold) was formerly covered with leaf gold, the Ca d'Rezzonico with silver. While both palazzos still stand, the facade covering is long gone. Remaining are beautiful gothic structures and wonderful glass beads named after them. Our Ca d´Oro bead category of beads shows both variations: gold foil and silver foil. Ca d´Oro beads have a typical cracked foil appearance, also called "rotto" (rotten, spoiled) by our Italian suppliers, "crackle" beads. This worn appearance is the sand washed look in Murano Beads and just like all "shabby chic" looks very desired. All our beads are a cut above the rest: high quality, which will clearly show in your jewelry.
Glass beads made in Venice with gold foil and silver foil interiors are relatively new. In these Venetian beads the foil is layered around a clear glass core and then covered with tinted glass. Metal oxides generate the colors of the glass, some of them more difficult to handle than others. In the case of the Ca d'Oro glass beads, the gold foil is layered around a color glass center and then covered with clear, high quality crystal like glass, creating a very distinct Venetian glass bead style, which is the trademark of Venetian beads and Murano beads or Murano pearls.
